The histories of each nation and culture are vast concepts. It's no wonder we are oblivious to so many of them, so much is cut out when we try to tell one historical narrative. Ourstory aims to shed light on these lesser known and darker sides of history. Genocides and hardships that often don't make the cut when history is taught.
In this project I explore how we remember controversial history. Controversial in the sense that it has not cemented itself in our collective human memory. I do this by revisiting 3 genocides from the 20th century: The Holodomor, the colonization of the Congo by King Leopold II of Belgium, and Japanese comfort women.
Ourstory’s goal is to encapsulate the memories of these genocides and historical tragedies in souvenirs. So that the seeds of these stories can spread, and help share the burden of remembrance from cultures around the world.
